The client engaged NTT DATA to help create a large-scale data governance program across all divisions. NTT DATA helped the client define the strategy for data governance and create an internal hybrid organization that would work in the shared service/distributed organization that makes up the operating structure of the company. NTT DATA also helped the client develop data governance processes to ensure proper workflow and management of the governance function across the hybrid governance organization.

Business Problem

The company was replacing its billing and customer management systems while also integrating business processes and functions across what had been highly disparate business units. There were significant quality and consistency problems with the current data as well as the need to continually evolve data capabilities as new business needs arose in this very competitive and dynamic environment. A large challenge for the client was finding a governance organization to fit their culture and environment.

Developed Solution

NTT DATA assisted with the definition and design of a corporate data governance program and developed processes and communications to ensure success. This included defining the data governance roles, responsibilities and processes to be used by a centralized Business Support Organization that included both business and IT resources. Key elements of the project included determining how a centralized governance organization could support the needs of the many business units and integrating the governance processes into the related IT (e.g., IT service request, change control) and business (e.g., new product/service development) processes. NTT DATA used examples of real world scenarios to describe the “as-is” and “to-be” environments to illustrate the processes and demonstrate the value of governance to the business.

Business Benefits

The engagement resulted in a data governance program design that reflected the client’s environment and culture. Business and IT data governance resources were identified and trained. Train-the-trainer materials and an operating manual were provided to enable the company to be self-sustaining going forward.
