Support for MUJI’s overseas business strategies with the use of “Global EC service”

NTT DATA Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “NTT DATA”) has constructed an on-line store of “MUJI” for Germany, which is deployed by Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Ryohin Keikaku”), and started the service from June 17, 2012.

NTT DATA, together with Ryohin Keikaku, has studied various EC deployment models based on Ryohin Keikaku’s overseas business strategies. Based on these studies, NTT DATA has provided comprehensive support for developing overseas business of Ryohin Keikaku by offering our “Global EC service” including a support for newly-launched EC business as well as construction and operation of EC site.

For the construction of EC site, using our EC application platform, “Direct Channel Platform® (note)” as a base enables the construction of EC site in a short time of period, which leads to the establishment of a new business.

Background

NTT DATA, together with Ryohin Keikaku, has studied various EC deployment models by taking into consideration of overseas business strategies of “MUJI”, one of global brands. We found that in order to respond to rapidly evolving overseas EC markets, the following four tasks are essential:

  1. 1Provide a sales appeal for “MUJI” as a globally unified brand through EC business initiated by Japan.
  2. 2Minimize the load due to the introduction and operation of EC on Ryohin Keikaku’s local subsidiaries.
  3. 3Not only install an EC system but also establish a new business including its operation.
  4. 4Ensure a smooth EC deployment in multiple countries in the future

By taking advantage of the overall strengths of NTT DATA group, NTT DATA made a proposal for a one-stop EC service, “Global EC service” that is a combination of “business support service” to provide a support for on-site business and “IT service” based on accumulated know-how of the construction and operation of global EC site. Upon adoption of this service plan, we constructed an on-line store for Germany, “MUJI Online Store” that opened on June 17, 2012, as a first step for Ryohin Keikaku’s global EC business deployment, planned to start from Germany, followed by China.

Business support service

Comprehensive support for the establishment of EC business

NTT DATA believes that for the establishment of EC business, it is important not only to provide an EC system but also to reconstruct the operations in consideration of existing main systems and responsible organizations. Our Global EC service can provide a support for business design according to your situation based on NTT DATA’s accumulated best practices through our staff experienced in EC business. In addition, with the use of KPI to be analyzed to increase sales through EC, we develop marketing strategies and implement PDCA cycle repeatedly until we contribute to the increase of your sales.

Support system for on-site works through cooperation with overseas group companies

For examaple, in case of cross-border delivery from Germany to Austria, payment of value-added tax(VAT) will be required for each country, and different forms are need to be designed.

In order to achieve global functions required in such cases, we provide systems/services taking into consideration of laws and regulations, service level, culture and business custom of different countries through cooperation with NTT DATA’s overseas group companies. This time, for provision of our service to Ryohin Keikaku, we work with one of our group companies, NTT DATA Deutschland in Germany.

Architecture that allows free combination of any services required locally

With the use of our “Direct Channel Platform”, you can develop EC throughout the world by establishing an architecture that allows free combination of the services common to all countries (related to products, inventories etc.) and local services (related to shipping charges, taxes etc.). (SaaS type)

This architecture ensures flexible and speedy deployment of different brands in the EC market in different countries, with a single system infrastructure by responding to different characteristics of EC business depending on the country and brand. At the same time, this architecture has the scalability that allows easy addition of channels and services according to the growth of business.

In this case, a single platform achieves cross-border delivery to Germany as well as Austria.

Use of NTT DATA’s global “BizXaaS®

The use of NTT DATA’s cloud service “BizXaaS” enables a flexible allocation of system resources. This also ensures the provision of stable service by dealing with the peak traffic rate during busy periods several times higher than usual, the scalability that can respond to a rapid increase in the number of target countries and the reliability ensuring continuous provision of 24-hour/365-day service.

Additionally, the system configuration, access control and data protection method in compliance with PCIDSS achieves high security and a high level of protection of personal data.

Future vision

NTT DATA will provide continous support for Ryohin Keikaku’s global business.

In the future, “Global EC service” will provide the companies studying the deployment of global EC business with a one-stop fulfillment service including:

  • “Business support service” to provide a support for business planning/Web marketing strategy planning/start of a new business
  • “IT service” to provide an SaaS-type direct channel platform
  • “operation service” to provide logistics/call center/site operation, to drive the business growth of the companies.

Direct Channel Platform…Based on the concept of SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture), this platform ensures improved development efficiency, scalability and reliability of EC site by consolidating and developing operational know-how for previously-provided EC sites and by defining and constructing different operations (including management of members, products and orders) as independent services.
