NTT DATA Corporation

A global high-resolution 3D map service, AW3DTM (“AW3D”) *1, provided by NTT DATA Corporation (“NTT DATA”) won the “Nikkei Business Daily Awards for Superiority” today at the “2016 Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards”, sponsored by Nikkei Inc. (“Nikkei”).

The Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards handpicks about 40 new products or services of particular excellence every year out of the products or services released that year, which amounts to about 20,000 items.

AW3D is the world’s most precise global 3D map covering all global land spaces with 5 meter resolution, developed and sold jointly with the Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (“RESTEC”). This service also distributes highly detailed 0.5 meter to 2 meter resolution versions of 3D map utilizing satellite images from DigitalGlobe. AW3D has been used in 300 projects, over 60 countries across the globe mainly in emerging countries in Asia and Africa, to contribute to measures for infrastructure, disaster prevention and much more.

NTT DATA plans to provide this service as a part of total solution which links the customer’s business applications, and move forward to expand its usage and to create a new 3D geospatial market in the future.

The Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards

The purpose of these Awards is to honor new products or services of distinguished excellence once a year, with this year marking the 35th contest since its beginning. Nikkei independently selects superb products or services from those covered by The Nikkei, The Nikkei Business Daily, The Nikkei MJ (marketing journal), The Nikkei Veritas, The Nikkei Online Edition and The Nikkei Asian Review during the period from January to December 2016, in principle. The selection is made by a judging panel in November, based on six criteria - technological and developmental potential, price effectiveness, the degree of contribution to the company’s achievements, growth potential, originality, and the impacts on industries and society - to handpick about 40 items out of some 20,000 new products and services.

AW3D

AW3D, the world’s most precise global 3D map service, uses a digital elevation model (DEM)*2 with five-meter resolution based on some three million satellite images taken by the DAICHI Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS)*3 of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). NTT DATA and RESTEC began distributing their Global Digital 3D Map Distribution Service in February 2014. This service have been developed and sold jointly with RESTEC. In May 2015, NTT DATA launched enhanced and building-focused services utilizing satellite images from DigitalGlobe. This service offers a high-definition and high-resolution 3D map at 0.5 meter to 2 meter resolution. The building-focused service offers highly detailed pictures of structures and their heights in a vector-map format.

The 3D map made from satellite imageries reduces the cost to a quarter of that of a conventional method that uses aerial photographs, and also minimizes the lead time to one week. The 3D mapping technology for 30 to 90 meters has significantly improved, and it makes the use of this service possible in emerging countries particularly in Asia and Africa, in various fields including map creation, disaster prevention, power plant in the electricity sector, mining-field inspections in the natural resource sector, infectious disease prevention in the hygiene sector, and urban and facility planning. NTT DATA has developed a variety of product lineups and its global support to the customer along with this world’s most precise 3D map technology. With this development, NTT DATA has successfully opened up new markets encompassing 60 countries and contributed to making more efficient and sophisticated disaster prevention measures, resource planning, urban planning, electricity development and communications services in the global market.

NTT DATA plans to combine this service with other business applications - such as air route navigation and radio propagation analysis and simulation for mobile service - to provide total solutions, in addition to selling the mapped data. NTT DATA will also promote a wider use of geospatial information and open up new markets.

Notes

  • *1Digital 3Dmaps

Data containing records of 3D coordinate values (horizontal location and elevation) of the earth’s surface. Composed of two types of data: Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) which indicate elevation, and orthographic projection (orthorectified) images, which indicate horizontal location. The orthorectified images correct distortions that accompany aerial photographs and have had correct locational information added to them.

  • *2Digital Elevation Model (DEM)

A digital expression of the terrain of the ground surface that has digitized height values in intervals of specific lattice points. The resolution is a measure of the level of detail of the data. 5-meter resolution means that the height values have been recorded in lattice point intervals of 5 meters. With regard to similar global-scale maps that have been provided to date, there are 90-meter and 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Models (first edition released in 2003), developed through data observed via US space shuttles in 2000; there is also a 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (first edition released in 2009) jointly developed by the US and Japan through satellite images starting in 2000.

  • *3Advanced Land Observing Satellite “DAICHI” (ALOS)

A Japanese earth observation satellite that was operated from January 2006 to May 2011. It conducted high-detail observation of the entire world and contributed to such fields as cartography and the updating of maps, disaster status confirmation, and the observation of local environments. Of the approximately 6.5 million images that were captured during the satellite’s period of operation, this service utilizes approximately 3 million that the Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping (PRISM) captured with low cloud cover.
