NTT DATA and Microsoft Jointly Build RFID Management System Using ID Commerce Platform® Technology and BizTalk® Server

NTT DATA Corporation (Head Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toru Yamashita) and Microsoft Co., Ltd., Japan (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yasuyuki Higuchi) have built a prototype RFID tag management system, using the ID Commerce Platform®(Note 1) developed by NTT DATA based on specifications drafted by the ID Commerce Platform Development Initiative, and Microsoft’s BizTalk® (Note 2) Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk RFID. The prototype system is to be applied to a research model of the next-generation passenger baggage handling system, being developed by the Advanced Airport Systems Technology Research Consortium (ASTREC; Chairman: Masahiko Kurono; Narita Office: Narita, Chiba Prefecture), in order to verify the viability of the technologies.

About the ID Commerce Platform and BizTalk

The ID Commerce Platform has functions needed for interworking of systems across enterprises and industries, such as management of peer information and collection of distributed management information, as well as information security functions (two-way system authentication, access control using attribute certificates, and communication path encryption). BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk RFID provide the functionality for converting formats when information is exchanged between systems, as well as other functions facilitating connections to existing systems and to RFID readers.

A framework for realizing a next generation passenger baggage handling system

Existing passenger baggage handling systems do not offer a free choice of service providers, providing passengers with only a limited combination of airlines, airport delivery firms and home delivery firms. And the existing systems are posing difficulties for service providers. One of them is the cost and time involved in setting up a new service.

ASTRAC has been carrying out studies into a next generation passenger baggage handling system research model that allows service users to select freely any combination of service providing companies. To enable this freedom of choice, the system must be able to link information from each of the companies in any combination. The key issues for realizing this goal are how to establish cross-system collaboration readily using existing systems and how to achieve secure information exchange across systems.

NTT DATA and Microsoft have solved the issues by making use of the ID Commerce Platform, BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk RFID.

The resulting RFID management prototype system has the following three main advantages.

1. Automation of manual service operations

When service operations are performed, the ID Commerce Platform is used to automate information checking and manual collation of information, which should result in fewer mistakes and greater efficiency. Data portability between existing systems and the ID Commerce Platform is handled by BizTalk Server 2006 R2.

2. More efficient provision of traceability information

Use of the ID Commerce Platform enables fast, easy, and secure checking of traceability information, showing the status of baggage transport across multiple companies.

3. Easy interworking with existing systems

Use of BizTalk Server 2006 R2 and BizTalk RFID ensures ease of connection to existing systems, RFID readers and other existing equipment.

Future Plans

NTT DATA and Microsoft intend to continue participating in studies of the next generation passenger baggage handling system research model, and also to pursue its business possibilities in logistics and other fields.
