Turbolinux, Inc. (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Koichi Yano) and NTT DATA Corporation (Head Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toru Yamashita) will provide commercial support for Web servers running the Turbolinux server OS Turbolinux 11 Server ("11S"), which comes with TOMOYO®Linux, a security-enhanced component developed by NTT DATA. The new support service, branded as Turbo Support for Secure Web Server, is expected to become available in mid-February.
There is an increasing awareness of and need for system security. A secure OS is a viable solution to this need, but concerns about system administration issues have stood in the way of wider use. In the newly announced service, technical support is provided jointly by the OS distributor and the secure OS developer. The aim is to make available the kind of high-level support response that has been missing up to now for a secure OS, and to answer the needs for enhanced security in corporate systems.
Users can enjoy the following benefits from this support service.
- Access control settings (policies) are provided in template form, for efficiently configuring the secure OS with the proper settings.
- Since technical support is also offered jointly, a system optimized in accord with the company's security policy can be set up quickly.
With the start of this support service, Turbolinux will be distributing TOMOYO Linux policy sets for use with 11S Web servers, aimed at secure OS promotion and expansion of the user base. The policy sets for 11S will be available for reference and use by anyone, including individual users, at no charge.
Market Background
A security-enhanced Linux system has advanced access control functions for preventing hacker attacks or other system breaches. Such functionality is essential in a Web server, which is an Internet/intranet front end. Up to now, however, the complexity of policy settings has made it difficult for server administrators to understand these functions and take full advantage of them. TOMOYO Linux addresses this difficulty by incorporating a learning mode, to assist in policy creation and generate policy settings automatically. Moreover, the created policy settings can be edited, and server administration can be carried out with a proper understanding of the policy details, greatly reducing the barriers to effective use of security-enhanced Linux. At the same time, corporations wanting to achieve fast and trustworthy implementation of a security environment optimized for their own situation will welcome the efficient and effective support, including provision of policy settings specialized for their system, along with technical assistance with system administration.
Outline of Turbo Support for Secure Web Server
The concept behind this service can be summarized as "realization of a secure Web server that can be set up easily and administered at ease." The service is designed to empower users to take effective advantage of TOMOYO Linux, a security-enhanced Linux provided as a standard part of 11S, for Web server use. To this end, the service jointly provides technical support for server configuration and administration, as well as access control settings (policies) in template form. 11S is the only commercial distribution to come with standard provision of TOMOYO Linux. From a support standpoint as well, this system can be used with peace of mind for business operations.
