NTT DATA Corporation (President and CEO: Toru Yamashita) along with NTT DATA Business Brains Corporation (President and CEO: Shuzo Sato) and Will Inc. (President and CEO: Hiromi Taniguchi), in cooperation with the Eclipse Japan Working Group and NTT DATA IntraMart Corporation (President: Yoshihito Nakayama), have developed a Japanese-language localization pack for the Eclipse 3.4 open source integrated software development platform, making it available to the public free of charge starting today.

Eclipse is a world-standard platform for developing systems in the Java language. It is a standard development platform in Japan as well, where the language pack released today will enable developers to use the latest Eclipse version in a Japanese-language environment. Companies and projects that conduct system development using Eclipse and Eclipse-based development support tools can expect a significant boost in productivity and quality as a result.

NTT DATA, NTT DATA Business Brains, and Will are committed to contributing not only to the improvement of the productivity and quality of system development through use of open source software but also to the vitalization of the open software community.

Background

Eclipse is an integrated development platform provided by its developer, the Eclipse Foundation, through the open source community. Eclipse has been widely used as a standard tool for Java development, and a variety of development environments based on Eclipse have been made available by software vendors.

In the NTT DATA Group, a number of Eclipse-based development support tools and development platforms have been created. They include FINALUNA®, Hinemos®, eBuilder (used as a development environment in intra-mart®, which is an integrated framework for developing web applications ), blanco Framework®, and TERASOLUNA® IDE, among others.

Up to Eclipse 3.2, Japanese language support was available from the Eclipse Foundation in the form of language packs. Since Eclipse 3.3, however, the provision of such packs has ceased, making it more difficult to use Eclipse in a Japanese-language environment.

To address this situation, NTT DATA Business Brains, making use of Pleiades, a plug-in that provided by Will for Japanese localization of Eclipse, developed the language pack generator blancoNLpackGenerator and has offered the resulting Japanese Language Pack 3.3 as beta software.

NTT DATA then worked with NTT DATA Business Brains, Will, the Eclipse Japan Working Group, and NTT DATA IntraMart to develop Japanese Language Pack Ver. 3.4, which starting today is available free of charge on the NTT DATA Group Open Source Square Web site. This contribution is made out of appreciation to the open source community for its software such as Eclipse, which NTT DATA makes use of in its own solutions, and is offered in the hope that we can further stimulate the activities of the community.

Features of the Japanese Language Pack 3.4 Release

Having the same structure as previous language packs, the new pack can be installed readily by users of earlier versions of Eclipse and its language packs.

Another feature is the high level of accuracy compared to translations performed using Pleiades alone.

Feedback to the Open Source Community

The Japanese localization resources (dictionaries, word lists, etc.) created in developing Japanese Language Pack 3.4 will be fed back to open source projects, including Pleiades and the Eclipse Foundation. To ensure that these resources can be used freely, the development results are also being made available to users of Pleiades and of future Japanese language packs scheduled for provision by the Eclipse Foundation.

NTT DATA, NTT DATA Business Brains, and Will are committed to contributing not only to the improvement of the productivity and quality of system development based on open source software but also to the vitalization of the open software community.
