NTT DATA Corporation

NTT DATA Corporation (Head Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toru Yamashita) today launched the XBRL Gateway Website (http://xbrlgateway.asia), which lets visitors experience the convenience of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language), a language facilitating the exchange of financial and other computerized data by corporations.
The site makes use of XBRL-Viewer, the world's first tool of its kind for displaying XBRL data. It provides an environment where corporate financial and other data can be viewed free of charge in XBRL format, and covering both Japanese and overseas companies.

Background

In Japan, XBRL was adopted first in 2004 for the National Tax Agency online tax return filing and tax payment system (e-Tax). This was followed by adoption for the local tax portal system eLTAX in 2005, and for the Bank of Japan online system for bank examinations in 2006 (a system used by financial institutions and others to report their financial status to the Bank of Japan). In 2008, XBRL format was adopted in the Financial Services Agency EDINET (Electronic Disclosure for Investors Network) system, and in the new TDnet (Timely Disclosure Network) system of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Adoption of XBRL for public infrastructure systems is also gaining pace worldwide, with growing use for improving oversight of financial and securities activities in Europe and North America, as well as for making government run more efficiently as in the case of XBRL adoption by the Dutch government. Lately the emphasis has shifted toward finding effective ways of using XBRL in a broader range of areas.
With this background, NTT DATA with help from the U.S. firm UBmatrix, Inc. and Fujitsu Limited decided to start up XBRL Gateway, a Website supporting users of XBRL data, as a way of promoting wider XBRL use. NTT DATA, UBmatrix, and Fujitsu hope that XBRL Gateway will increase interest in using XBRL and lead to the growth of their XBRL-related business.

Service Offerings

XBRL Gateway is a Website featuring the XBRL-Viewer tool and introducing case studies of XBRL utilization. Using XBRL-Viewer, the world's first tool that can show XBRL-format data in side-by-side and graph views for ready comparison, the site provides an environment where visitors can easily experience XBRL for themselves.

Using a system developed in house, NTT DATA converted corporate financial report data of around 100 Japanese companies to XBRL format, after downloading the data for each of the 2005 to 2007 fiscal years from EDINET in HTML format.
XBRL-Viewer has functions for displaying this XBRL data in a way that makes it easy to comprehend. It is the world's first viewer allowing financial report data of multiple companies to be viewed side by side in a table and in graph form.
Users can also click on XBRL-Viewer columns to view document data from securities reports under such headings as "Company Performance" and "Business Outlook." In this way, XBRL Gateway serves as a comprehensive archive of securities reporting documents.
Corporate financial data of companies from different countries can also be compared easily, so long as the data has been converted to XBRL format. In order to enable future use of the XBRL Gateway for viewing financial reports of companies in various Asian countries, negotiations are being carried out with stock exchanges in Vietnam, Thailand and other countries.
  • Case Studies of XBRL Use
Services and applications using XBRL, such as NTT DATA's ZaimonTM (http://www.zaimon.jp/e-tax/tax-acc/index.html), are introduced on the Website along with product technologies supported by XBRL use.

Looking Ahead

XBRL Gateway will be introduced in presentations and exhibits at NTT DATA Innovation Conference 2009, to be held January 29. Additional occasions will be provided thereafter as well, enabling more people to experience the convenience of XBRL through the XBRL Gateway. Further ahead, we plan to enhance the value of the service by expanding the types of financial reports available and extending their storage time, and also by adding analysis and other new functions.
