Growing Importance Of Technology
The 2026 Annual Third-Party Logistics Study reveals that relationships between shippers and third-party logistics (3PL) providers continue to strengthen, with shippers (88%) and 100% of 3PLs reporting successful partnerships.

The study also highlights the growing importance of technology, with advanced analytics, AI and machine learning being key areas of focus. However, challenges persist, including a persistent gap between shipper expectations and 3PL technology capabilities, the adoption of emerging technologies, securing capital and talent acquisition.

2026 Annual Third-Party Logistics Study
The 2026 Annual Third-Party Logistics Study investigates leading trends and uncovers how shippers and 3PLs can better collaborate to improve service and increase value.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of this seminal supply chain study. Since its founding in 1996 by Dr. C. John Langley, Clinical Professor of Supply Chain Management in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems (SC&IS) at Pennsylvania State University, the report has focused on people, processes, technology, relationship management, and the end-to-end supply chain.
Through the lens of the shipper-3PL relationship, the results provide valuable perspectives and insights and has become a widely anticipated and referenced index in the 3PL industry. Sponsors of the study include NTT DATA and Penske Logistics.
